Bollywood is often stereotyped for its off-the-cuff commercial films that have little to no plot. In all of the hotch-potch, people often miss out on hidden gems that are not only entertaining but leave an impact on the audience.   

Today, we will look at five unconventional Bollywood movies that you may not have heard of but are worth watching. Curious? Let’s take a look:   

1. Chittagong (2012) 

Directed by Bedabrata Pain, Chittagong follows the story of the Chittagong Uprising in the 1930s, led by Masterda Surya Sen. The film starred veteran actor Manoj Bajpayee as Surya Sen and Nawazuddin Siddiqui as Nirmal Sen.   

Chittagong became one of the unconventional Bollywood movies that portrayed India’s struggle for independence in a new light with a good script and defining performances.   

2. Shahid (2013)

Based on the life of a lawyer and human rights activist Shahid Azmi, Shahid follows the story of a young man falsely charged with acts of terrorism. Shahid decides to be a lawyer and fight for similar cases when he is released upon being convicted.   

Raw, gritty, and real beyond imagination is one of the most unconventional Bollywood movies that will leave a heavy feeling stuck in your throat.   

3. Shaurya (2008)

Unlike any other movie on the Indian Army, Shaurya explores the repercussions of violence that army officers go through and how it can cloud their judgment. The film stars Rahul Bose as a military lawyer investigating a case against a decorated Brigadier, played by Kay Kay Menon.   

A refreshing take on military life, Shaurya explores the other side of gallantry as one of the unconventional Bollywood movies.  

4. Masaan (2015)

The movie explores two different arcs of the story in the city of Varanasi that eventually collide into a tragic ending. Masaan may not be the feel-good watch most people expect out of Bollywood, but it changes perspectives.

5. Ankhon Dekhi (2013) 

Ankhon Dekhi tells a story of a middle-class patriarch living with his family in the lanes of Old Delhi who is suddenly struck by an epiphany and decides to believe only in things that he has seen.   

Starring Sanjay Mishra and directed by veteran actor Rajat Kapoor, who also plays Mishra’s brother’s role, this movie is one of the most eccentric Bollywood movies.
