6 Spiritual Buddhist Lessons for Inner Peace

Gautama Buddha was a sage who forewent his fortune, chose an austere life, and impacted a million lives in the 6th and 7th BCE. Buddha means ‘the enlightened one’, and he became one by accepting the truth of life through his spiritual wisdom.  

Irrespective of your religion, cultural and socio-economical background, the teachings of Buddha will awake your soul and help you find inner peace. Buddhism is not only a religion but a way of life.  

Following are some spiritual Buddhist lessons that help you liberate yourself from inner conflicts and give you a new perspective in life.  

1. “Peace comes from within.” 

We often chase certain things to fulfil our dreams or embark on a journey to find peace and happiness. However, the truth is that peace comes from within. It does not depend on any circumstances or external factors.   

This is why finding peace is difficult in life until or unless you feel it from within.  

2. “Better than a thousand hollow words is one word that brings peace.” 

It is one of the precious spiritual Buddhist lessons which teach us to speak less, speak right and speak quality. He meant to say that it doesn’t matter if one speaks a thousand words; it only takes one word of wisdom or peace to touch the listener’s heart.  

Therefore, choose your words carefully if you really want to make a listener calm and relaxed.  

3. “What we think, we become.” 

Buddha was a realist, and from a very early age, he realised that suffering is the truth of our life. However, it should not govern our life. The power to reduce our suffering is in our hands greatly.  

Our mind has the power to alleviate suffering. If you think positive, you will experience joy and peace. On the other hand, if you think negative, suffering will follow.  

4. “We ourselves must walk the path.” 

Often what takes away our inner peace is our expectation and dependency on others. Therefore, if you have to ensure peace, you must walk your path yourself.  

While people may give you moral support and encourage you, your journey is yours.  

5. “Do not dwell in the past; do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment: 

When talking about maintaining inner peace, you need to realise that it is possible if you keep yourself away from any distractions. However, procrastination and dwelling in the past are the biggest distractions you need to avoid at all costs.  

While it is not that easy, you can do it by concentrating on the present or the moments now.  

6. “The less you respond to negative people, the more peaceful your life will become.” 

People often disrupt their inner peace by listening to and responding to negative people. It does not bring any good, spoils your energy, and diverts you from your goal.  

Thus, Lord Buddha counselled people not to respond to negativity to maintain peace in life.
