1. Devdas (1955)

If you are a fan of the Sanjay Leela Bhansali Devdas starring Shah Rukh Khan, you should check out the original. Based on the Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay novel and directed by Bimal Roy, this movie broke ground in its age and even got Kumar numerous awards for his performance.   

The film also starred Vyjayanthimala as Chandramukhi and Suchitra Sen as Paro. The performance is also ranked second by the University of Iowa’s list of top 10 Bollywood performances.

2. Daag (1952)

Daag is a profound 1952 film directed by Amiya Chakravarty. The Hindi romantic drama helped Dilip Kumar bag the first Filmfare award ever in 1954 in the Best Actor category. Widely considered one of the best Dilip Kumar movies to watch, it narrated the story of Shankar, played by the legendary actor.   

His character struggles to make ends meet and becomes an alcoholic because of his inability to run his life. However, in a twist of events, he can make his fortune, but he fails to find his love and returns to alcoholism.

3. Mughal-e-Azam (1960)

The magnum opus of Indian cinema, Mughal-e-Azam, was made unforgettable with its brilliant performances by Dilip Kumar as Prince Salim, Prithviraj Kapoor as Akbar, and Madhubala as Anarkali.   

With evergreen songs like Pyaar Kiya to Darna Kya, the film won the Best Feature Film in Hindi, Best Film, Best Actress, and Best Director awards. The film follows the legend of Prince Salim’s unrequited love story with Anarkali, a female courtesan in Akbar’s court.

4. Shakti (1982)

Shakti had all the ingredients needed to make a Bollywood classic. It was directed by Sholay director Ramesh Sippy, written by Salim-Javed duo, and starred juggernauts like Dilip Kumar, Rakhee Gulzar, Amitabh Bachchan, Amrish Puri, Smita Patil, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda.   

The movie explores the complicated relationship between father Dilip Kumar and son Amitabh Bachchan. Both of the actors were nominated for the Best Actor award.   

5. Ganga Jamuna (1961)

Written and produced by the tragedy king himself, Ganga Jamuna is a crime drama directed by Nitin Bose. The film stars Kumar, Vyjayanthimala, and Nasir Khan. The film explored the story between two brothers, Ganga and Jamna.   

The older Ganga is accused of a crime he did not commit and runs away with his partner to evade punishment and join a group of bandits. Jamna, on the other hand, can complete his studies and become a policeman.   

Conflict arises when Ganga wants to return to his village when he is about to become a father, but Jamna wants him to surrender. It is one of the must-watch Dilip Kumar movies!
