5 Historically Accurate Movies that are as Good as Lessons!

While studying history can often be baffling with all the dates and events to remember, watching movies can make the process a lot more enjoyable. However, most historical movies are somewhat dramatized for creative purposes, making it difficult to separate fact from fiction.

1. Lincoln (2012)

Steven Spielberg’s 2012 biopic of the 16th American President Abraham Lincoln was an instant masterpiece. Starring Academy Award Winner Daniel Day-Lewis as the Great Emancipator, the film explores the president’s life and his struggles to abolish slavery and stop the American Civil War.

2. Schindler’s List (1993) 

Schindler’s List changed the perception of how World War 2 movies should be. A modern classic in every category, the film explores the account of Oskar Schindler and all the Jewish people he saved from German concentration camps.   

It gives the audience an insight into how heart-wrenching it was for the people to suffer and is a great way to start your passionate journey towards understanding the World Wars.   

3. 12 Years a Slave (2013)

Before this movie, slavery was generally treated as a hush-hush subject in Hollywood. However, 12 Years A Slave brings in the story of the time in details like never before, making it one of the most historically accurate movies.  

It explores the journey of an African-American man from the Northern States who has been captured as a slave in the South and how he finally finds his freedom.   

4. Sardar Udham (2021)

The Bollywood masterpiece directed by Shoojit Sircar explores the story of freedom fighter Udham Singh and his experiences during the Jallianwala Bagh massacre that led him to assassinate Michael O’Dwyer, the then Governor of Punjab.   

Fictionalized in some parts, the movie is a gripping account of the time, giving viewers an insight into the life of a freedom fighter like never before.   

5. Bajirao Mastani (2016) 

Bajirao Mastani explores the life of Peshwa Baji Rao Balal Bhatt and his prowess as a leader warrior. It also focuses on his relationship with Mastani, a Muslim by birth, and how their inter-faith love story was perceived in the 16th century.   

It is a genius film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and correctly traverses the mindset of the people and the cost of love in those times.
